So are Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. It can't be a coincidence that they are all held around the same time, the darkest time of the year. It made me think that maybe these festivals aren't so much about celebrating a deity as they are about adding light to the darkness. But then again, maybe that's exactly what all religion and spirituality boil down to: finding light when and where there is darkness.

PSYCHIC CHRISTMAS WISHES™
Looking for a last minute Christmas gift? Earlier this year I wrote down the entire story of my eating disorder. The story is now part of a book that was recently published called You Are Not Alone. The book is a collection of stories, poems and artwork centering on eating disorders. All proceeds from book sales will go to eating disorder organizations. www.youarenotalonebook.com

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF FREEDOM
On December 9 I celebrated my one year anniversary of being free from a full-time job. I now do several different things part-time each, and I am much happier. I drive a taxi, I do counseling sessions, I do German translation, I do freelance Flash development. I also paint but I'm not getting paid for that. Yet. Speaking of which..

ANTI-9 TO 5 INSPIRATION
I am doing a series of interviews with people who have created lives for themselves outside of the 9 to 5 world. I am hoping that these interviews will inspire others to see that they too can have the life and the living they want. The first interview was with my friend Angie, a professional artist. You can read the interview here.

NEW MOON ON WEDNESDAY
This Wednesday, December 20, is the last new moon of the year. You can use it to make a Christmas wish or to start thinking about new year's manifestations. This is a great opportunity to start the new year with a wish having come true. This is how you do it:

On the new moon this Wednesday, think of something you want that can reasonably be attained within two weeks, by the full moon on January 3. If you are working on a bigger wish that takes more time, think of the next smaller step that will lead towards it.

Make sure that you believe that it's possible for it to come true. If you don't believe it, it can't come true. It's important to believe it intellectually as well as emotionally.

Write it down on a piece of paper. Then put it away.

On the full moon on January 3, revisit your piece of paper. Did you get what you wanted?

Learn from your experience. And feel free to share your experience with me!

TRAVELING THIS WEEK?
I will be driving a taxi every day this week. If you need a taxi to the airport, please give me a call! Note though that by law I am only allowed to pick up within the city of San Francisco. But I can take you to any airport you want. At the time, the plan was that I wanted to do computer animation. The school I was attending didn't have a program for it, so I tried to combine both skill sets in my own way. I finally decided it would be more effective for me to attend a school that actually had a computer animation program, so I moved out to San Francisco. I started out studying animation and somehow wound up taking more illustration classes. The degree I finally received was a BFA for Illustration.

When and how did you start painting? I've always been interested in art. As a kid, I used to make my own coloring books. My ridiculously supportive parents recognized this interested and enrolled me in a little painting class when I was like 12. It was a small class that met in our teacher's garage.

When and how did you receive your first money for a painting? I had a studio that was a part of a monthly open studios night. A local gallery owner came through and invited me to be a part of a group show. The first painting I sold was opening night.

How long have you been a full-time painter? I've been painting full-time for just one year.

What were you doing before you were a full-time painter? I had a few interesting jobs in the arts - I was an illustrator for a bit and then worked as an industrial designer. Besides those exceptions, I've had mostly lame restaurant jobs.

What did you do to get your work out there? The main thing that propelled my work being noticed was placing an ad in an art publication. I had a connection that hooked me up with a full page ad in a Texas art guide. My first gallery contacted me from seeing that ad. It's been a snowball effect ever since.

Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently? I would have given painting a shot much sooner. Had I known that I could actually support myself with my art, there would have been a lot fewer tables waited upon.

Do you have any advice for aspiring artists? If you are going to do this seriously, you need to treat your artwork as a business. You need to advertise. You need to protect yourself - if you're doing a commission, always get half up front. Create contracts and document agreements. I've been burned several times, but have definitely learned from my mistakes. There's this book called "The Practical Handbook for the Emerging Artist" by Lazzari that I thought was really helpful. I still refer to it.

What were your main obstacles to overcome? As with any major change in one's life, the main obstacle I had to overcome was a fear of failure. The fact that I had nothing to lose when I embarked upon this path was a huge help in overcoming that fear. I left behind my life and my friends in San Francisco to be able to focus entirely upon painting. It was a big sacrifice but it was what I felt I needed to do at the time.

What was the turning point for you in your career? The major turning point was when I moved to Texas to fully commit myself to becoming a painter. I was laid-off of a design job and faced with a decision of returning to school to build up my design portfolio or to try to make painting my sole source of income. I knew I couldn't fully devote myself to building up a volume of work if I was painting part time and I knew I couldn't afford to live in San Francisco without working full time. So I packed up and moved in with my mom in Texas for six months so that I could live rent-free and paint full time. I didn't want to look back on life and regret not taking the chance..

To what do you attribute your success? The support and encouragement I have received from my family and friends is what has gotten me this far. My parents have always been in support of my art - my mom basically talked me into giving painting a proper chance. My good friend from school who is now an insanely successful painter has been a huge source of encouragement and motivation. Also, my very understanding roommates who allow me to have my studio in our house - fumes, sprawling canvases and all.

Any last words? It is possible to live the pipe dream of doing something you love for a living. It takes talent. It takes hard work and commitment. It takes rejection and disappointment. It takes selling yourself and shmoozing. But it is absolutely worth it.

Introducing: Psychic Christmas Wishes&#8482

This holiday season you can send Psychic Christmas Wishes&#8482 to your friends and family. We don't know what's going to happen, so a part of us feels hopeful while another part of us feels fearful. Here are some example situation where this might occur.

- You just had a job interview.
- It's election time.
- You want to ask your boss for a raise.
- You are in a new relationship and don't know if it's going to work out.
- You just sent off a book proposal.
- Somebody you love is about to give birth.

I'm sure you can think of many more scenarios where hope and fear go to battle with each other. The unfortunate thing about fear is that it can actually affect the outcome. Fear has a negative vibration, and since like vibrations attract each other, fear can attract negative things. So in the case of uncertainty, you want to be careful not to be sending out too many fearful vibes.

Here is something that has helped me a lot in such situations. This is what I tell myself, over and over again:

I am so excited about the potential of this situation.

I am so excited about the potential of this situation.

I am so excited about the potential of this situation.

Think about something in your life you feel both hopeful and fearful about right now. As you think about this situation, say to yourself

I am so excited about the potential of this situation.

Don't you feel better already? [...] The rhythm of the road, the distraction from what has been bothering you, and the idea of going someplace new often causes you to leave behind thoughts of things that have been bothering you.

I resonate very strongly with that. I have always loved driving or being driven. When I was having some psychological problems at the age of 10, I sometimes suggested to my mom to put me in the backseat of the car and drive me around because I knew that it would calm me down. When I got my driver's license at age 18, suddenly my teenage life didn't feel quite as depressing as before because I now had the freedom to go places, or to get away from places. When I drove across the country to move from Virginia to San Francisco four years ago, I wanted nothing more than to keep driving forever. Whenever I'm on a road trip, I feel completely alive. And this year I became a part-time taxi driver. I really love driving.

But I think that if you are somebody who doesn't like being in a car at all and you were reading this book, the paragraph wouldn't have been there. I do believe that the text in books, especially channeled books like this one, can shapeshift like that. I do believe, in a way, that that paragraph was put there just for me.

Vera's Full Moon Newsletter

Dear Summer People,

Today is the full moon. I received something very special in the mail today. Of course - the full moon is for receiving! I received a Psychic Journal. More on that further below. But first..

DREAMS AND INSECURITIES
Do you have dreams? Do you have insecurities? I have both. Dreams are what I strive for; insecurities are my road blocks. But that doesn't mean that insecurities are bad. Oh no. They are not bad. I love them, just as much as I love dreams. They are powerful, and I am learning so much from them.

For a while now I have been wondering what my specialty is as a counselor. People sometimes say “Oh, you’re a counselor. What kind?” And I often tell them that I'm a life counselor. Then they ask “Which part of life?” and I say “Everything.” But that's not really true. I have known for a while that I have a special interest in dreams. Not the what-did-you-dream-last-night kind, but the what-is-your-biggest-dream-and-why-aren't-you-living-it kind. And Insecurity is Dream's ugly cousin. But the ugly cousin needs to be heard too. She needs some attention, so that she won't plot against others for being mean to her.

I have been discussing my insecurities very publicly on my blog. Being that open may be daunting for many, but it's the perfect tool for me right now. It's the perfect way for my dream's ugly cousin to be heard. I have found that laying my insecurities out in the sun, actually makes them go away. Suddenly Insecurity is not so ugly anymore. Suddenly we can actually be friends. I am feeling more liberated, relieved, and yes, secure. Dreams & Insecurities, like Yin & Yang, like Light & Dark, like Blue & Yellow, like Male & Female, they balance me out.

TAXI BLOG
One of my dreams right now is to write a taxi column for a newspaper or magazine. I'm actively working on making that real but for now, my taxi column has a little place on the web: http://daycabbie.blogspot.com/

INTERCHANGE ORIENTATION
As mentioned before, the year-long counseling training I took, which ended in June, is starting up again this fall. Interchange has been invaluable for me in that it has enabled me to feel and express my feelings to the fullest and to hold space for others to do the same. If you're interested in finding out more about the program, Steve is having an orientation this Monday, August 14.

PSYCHIC JOURNAL
One of the most exciting moments of my life was when in February 2004 my name and picture appeared on the Macromedia website next to an article I had written about web services. Recently I had a similarly exciting moment when my name appeared next to the words “Psychic Journal” on lulu.com.

My ex-roommate Joe told me about lulu.com. It's a self-publishing site where anybody can publish books, calendars, CD’s, etc. Joe said “Dude, Vera, I think you need to look into this.” I did, and less than 36 hours later, my Psychic Journal was published. And I had known, before meeting Joe for coffee that day, that he was going to give me something special that was going to propel me forward. And that shall be the first entry in my own Psychic Journal.

I had been wanting to create a Psychic Journal ever since I saw a Knitting Journal at the knitting store. I had searched Amazon.com and there was no journal called Psychic Journal. I knew this had to change. Journaling is one of the most important strengtheners of the psychic sense. The world needed a Psychic Journal. And now it has one. Getting off Muni today, I knew that my Psychic Journal had arrived in the mail. I could tell by the excitement I was feeling as I walked home. And that shall be the second entry in my Psychic Journal.

I had hoped for Chronicle Books to publish my Psychic Journal, and maybe one day they will. But for now, I just had to get this out: http://www.lulu.com/content/378747

It's apparent that I have a very strong drive to publish things, to have my name appear on a website, to have my picture appear in a magazine. For a while I thought that that drive came from my ego. But now I know that that's not true. Having published works touches something much deeper in me than my ego. In the depth of my soul—as in everybody's—there is a desire to make a contribution, to create, to have a voice. That contribution, that creation, that voice, makes me feel alive.

What makes YOU feel alive? What drives YOU?

Bliss,
Vera.

Introducing: Psychic Journal

I created a Psychic Journal so that you and I can become more psychic by journaling about it. It marks the end of “some of your life” (thanks for that expression, Michelle!). After this turning point, will your soul feel good or bad? It’s up to you. I recently finished reading There Is Nothing Wrong With You by Cheri Huber (long ago recommended by you, Robin), in which I found a very poignant statement: “If all you’re being is miserable, miserable is not so bad. It’s only when you’re miserable and hating miserable that it’s really hell.” And that’s true for so many things, not just being miserable. In each moment, at each turning point, I can decide to hate something or not. I can hate being too shy to give my business card to an interesting stranger, I can hate that I don’t have a book deal with Chronicle Books yet, I can hate that I’m not rich and famous yet. Or I can NOT hate all of that and feel good anyway. Every day, there are thousands of opportunities, thousands of little turning points, where I can decide to feel good about what I am and what I have, regardless of what I am not or what I don’t have.

Today is soulstice, and this Sunday is the new moon. Since this new moon is so close to soulstice, I encourage you to set an intention for the next six months. What does your soul crave right now? But remember to also set the intention to feel good even if you don’t get what you ask for.

NEW JOB
So yeah, I have been thinking a lot about feeling good and feeling bad. I have also been thinking a lot about money, again. I ran out of money recently, so I started a freelance job. Three days a week I go into an office and do Flash development. It’s not my passion anymore, but it’s fun for now. And it’s nice not to worry about money anymore. Thanks to all of you who helped me realize that all the Flash job offers I was getting were not just an irony, but actual help from the universe.

CERTIFIED AS A COUNSELOR
I recently finished my year-long counseling training with Steve Bearman and am now a certified radical counselor. If you’re interested, Steve is doing the training again starting this fall. I highly recommend it.

I am also eager to practice my new tools. If you would like to talk to me about your life and your dreams and yes, fears, please get in touch. I would love to see what kind of mountains we can move together.

WITCH CAMP
This Sunday, on the new moon, I leave for Witch Camp for a week. It’s near Mendocino. I am going to learn how to drum (!) and learn a lot about magic, shamanism, and about myself. I can’t wait.

So that’s what’s going on in my universe. What is it like in yours?

Bliss,
Vera.

Vera's Friendship Newsletter #2

Hello friends,

The friendship theme still fits; I couldn't think of a theme that fits better, so we're stuck with friendship one more time.

I just found out that in Finland, Valentine's Day is called ystävänpäivä, which means 'friend's day'. It is more about celebrating your love for friends than your love for lovers. Perfect! That's exactly what Psychic Valentines are about.

PSYCHIC VALENTINES
A friend of mine told me today that he was kind of confused about what a Psychic Valentine is. So let me explain: A Psychic Valentine is a Valentine's greeting you can send to a friend. Your friend will receive something similar to an animated greeting card. But the greeting also includes a gift certificate for psychic advice via email. After receiving the Psychic Valentine, your friend can email me a question for psychic advice or insight. An example of a question might be "I don't like my job, but I don't know what else I should or can do instead – do you have any insight?" And you bet that I do. I will respond to your friend's question promptly. I have gotten some great feedback from people who have received email advice, so I am confident that it works.

For more info about Psychic Valentines and to see what one looks like, go here.

And if you have your own website and would like to support me, please put a Psychic Valentines button on your website and link it to http://www.dragonflypsychic.com/valentine/. You can download the button here:

I am learning a lot of Finnish these days, by the way. I almost know all the animals now. I am working on colors next.

The other weekend during my counseling training (Interchange), we did this awesome meditation that really inspired me. I am trying to recreate that experience on Monday, February 13.

LAUGHING AND CRYING MEDITATION
It's a meditation that is based on and an abbreviated version of Osho's Mystic Rose meditation. The meditation lasts for one hour, and this is how we spend that hour: For the first twenty minutes we laugh, then for twenty minutes we cry, and finally we spend twenty minutes sitting in silence with eyes closed.

At the end of it, I felt the ultimate bliss and contentment. I think it's because my being had achieved balance. After enacting joy and then enacting sadness, I was left feeling perfectly balanced and at peace. For a long time I have felt that "balance is everything," that balance is the key to the universe. This meditation guarantees to achieve balance.

Because I enjoyed it so much, I want to share it with the world. So I am offering in San Francisco a safe space for experiencing the laughing and crying meditation--for free!

Here are the details:

When: Monday, Feb. 13, 7:30pm-9:30pm
Where: SpiralMuse Home of WellBeing, 3387 22nd Street (@ Guerrero), San Francisco, CA
Why: So we can balance and heal
Cost: Free!

More info here.

Please let me know if you are coming.

Finally—I almost sent this letter out on Tuesday but didn't, and now I know why. Thanks to Amy Leblanc for mentioning this event on her blog, I will be offering FREE crystal ball psychic readings at Circo Romani, a Gypsy Dinner Circus.

CRYSTAL BALL PSYCHIC READINGS AT CIRCO ROMANI
I don't normally use a crystal ball, but I'm getting myself one just for this event! The dinner circus show starts at 8pm, and I will be in the front room at CELLspace, giving readings *before* the show. Here is my schedule:

Thursday, Feb. 16, 7-8pm
Friday, Feb. 17, 7-8pm
Sunday, Feb. 19, 7-8pm

So if you're coming to Circo Romani, stop by my table and get a reading! To find out more about Circo Romani, please visit their website.

Feel free to forward any part of this letter on to anybody that you think might like to receive it.

Bliss,
Vera.

Vera's Awakening Newsletter

Dear Friends,

I know I just wrote you but I have lots of new news already. Have you ever noticed how you don’t realize what you have until you lose it? That almost happened to me recently when I almost lost the lease on the taxi I drive. I recently had a very small accident with the taxi where I backed into a parked car. When I reported the accident to the cab company, I missed one important step. Because of this missed step, my lease was almost cancelled. That’s when it became clear to me how much I LOVE driving the taxi. The day of the accident had actually been one of my favorite taxi driving days on which I had nothing but fun people in the car. Luckily, the cab company decided to give me another chance. I still drive a taxi on Mondays and Fridays and am now appreciating it more than ever! It reminded me that it's always good to appreciate what I have while I have it.

WITCH CAMP
I got back from Witch Camp on Sunday. At times very uncomfortable and pushing all kinds of my boundaries, the experience was overall truly transformational, eye-opening and magical. I was high on energy and magic all week. When a group of psychically awake people is shut off from the rest of the world for a week, something remarkable happens. I don’t know how else to say it, except that magic is real. I felt it with my own eyes.

MOON CYCLE MANIFESTATION WORKSHOP
I’m teaching Moon Cycle Manifestation again in San Francisco . The workshop combines manifestation, intuition and the moon cycles. The dates have been set set for Wednesdays starting July 26, every two weeks, until Sept. 6. For more details, go to www.dragonflypsychic.com/mooncyclemanifestation/.

RELATIONSHIP COMPLETION RITUAL
I am happy to announce that I am now offering relationship completion rituals as part of my counseling practice. The ritual can be used to end a relationship or to set off a new stage of a relationship. It is useful for energetically completing a relationship that has ended but is still lingering in your space and affecting your life. Both parties can be present for the ritual but don’t have to be.

DREAM TRANSLATION
Another new thing I am offering is dream translation. Dreams speak to us in the language of the soul. As an interpreter of psychic visions, I have gotten accustomed to the language of the soul and can now also apply it to dreams. So.. tell me your dreams!

Till next time,
Vera.

Vera's Freedom Newsletter

Hi everybody,

This is the first issue of a newsletter I am going to be sending out regularly. I added you to the list because

1) I like you and
2) I thought you might be interested in what I'm offering to the world now that I don't have a full-time job anymore.

If you would like to be removed from this list, please let me know and I will remove you.

On Tuesday, January 17, my first intuition and psychic awareness workshop starts. It will meet nine times on Tuesdays until April 4. Developing my own intuition has completely changed my life, and this is my attempt to share with others what I have learned and what it can do for you. I believe that anybody can benefit from a good dose of pure unadulterated intuition. Here is some more information about the workshop.

If you or somebody you know would like to sign up, please let me know as soon as possible. If you or somebody you know would like to take it but the cost of it is standing in the way, talk to me.

A couple of weeks later, on the new moon on Monday, January 30th, another series of Moon Cycle Manifestation starts. I have already offered this workshop once in October/November. It will meet four times on Mo(o)ndays on or near the new moons and full moons until March 13. It is about attracting the things you want to come to you, using the moon cycles for extra power and your own intuition to guide you. Here are the details about this workshop.

Lastly, here is something FREE: From now until further notice I am offering a free Tarot reading to anyone who can meet with me in person. I don't have much experience with Tarot yet—that's why it's free—but since I got the intuitive part of it down, I have found that the readings are quite effective in spite of my inexperience. Let me know if you would like to be my practice Tarot client.

That's it for now. Thanks so much for listening!

With gratitude,
Vera.

Vera's Friendship Newsletter

Dear ones,

Friends sometimes ask me "So what do you do all day now?" And as I have responded to some of you already, the answer is "Whatever I feel like!" I feel like going for a walk, I go for a walk. If I feel like taking a nap, I take a nap. If I feel like going to yoga, I go to yoga. If I feel like playing on the computer, I play on the computer. If I feel like going to a coffee shop and staring, I go to a coffee shop and stare. It works!

But I have also been doing quite a few free Tarot readings and practice counseling sessions with people. And I have been babysitting my favorite twin girls who just turned a year old on Saturday!

Another thing I'm doing a lot is learning. I'm learning a lot about myself, about money, and about mutuality.

MOON CYCLE MANIFESTATION
One thing I have learned is that I'm asking too much for my workshops. I'm asking so much that even my friends don't want to take them. That's why I want to offer the Moon Cycle Manifestation workshop that starts on Jan. 30 at a friendship price. Moon Cycle Manifestation is about bringing the things you want into your life, using the moon cycles for extra support and your own intuition for guidance. It meets four times, twice on the new moon and twice on the full moon. Here is some more information about it.

So I asked myself what would be a good friendship price - $75, $55? But I finally realized that a true friendship price would be to ask only for donations. So that's what I'm doing now. The suggested donation is $11 per class meeting, but there is no minimum donation and nobody will be turned away for lack of funds. So when you or your friend wants to register for the workshop, please mention the word 'friendship'.

PSYCHIC VALENTINES
Also on the note of friendship: I'm excited to announce the opportunity to send Psychic Valentines this year. A Psychic Valentine is a gift certificate for psychic insight. You can send them to anybody you want. The details are here.

If you want me to send you a reminder to request some Psychic Valentines, let me know and I will send you a reminder email a week before Valentine's Day, on February 7, so that you can still get them on time.

Have a beautiful late January!
Vera.

Vera's Spring Newsletter

Happy Spring, everybody!

I haven’t written in a while, so no wonder I have a lot to talk about.

TAXI SCHOOL
One thing I’m excited about right now is that I just finished taxi school and am about to become a licensed San Francisco taxicab driver. Can you believe it? I was just as surprised about this as you are. But it turns out that going to taxi school is what I needed to be doing right now; it became crystal clear to me after a friend of a friend saw me for a Tarot reading and told me that he used to drive a taxi, just for fun. I am planning on doing it for fun as well, one day a week. Once I know which day that is I will let you all know, and if you ever need a taxi that day, you can call me and my taxicab! Hopefully it will be one with NICE COLORS. I’m trying to get hired at a taxi company whose cars have nice colors. Thanks, Tyson!

PSYCHIC GOODIES
I have added some new psychic goodies on my website. After Valentine’s Day was over I was bummed that people couldn’t send Psychic Valentines anymore, so I created some new similar psychic gift certificates: Generic anytime Psychic Wishes and Psychic Birthday Wishes. Last week there was also a Psychic St Patrick’s Wish, and I am planning on making a Mother’s Day one soon. If there is a psychic gift certificate YOU would like to see, let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

PAINTING
Thanks to my friend Tracy I started a new hobby: Painting! I already made four paintings, and I’m very proud. Check them out.

THE CITY
I seem to be doing a lot of things that pay homage to San Francisco. I made a painting of the New York Street Café in the Mission and am planning to paint more San Francisco urban scenes. I have also been taking pictures all over the city and submitting them to the Guess Where SF group on Flickr like crazy. I can’t stop doing that! Plus, I am going to be a San Francisco taxi driver to get to know the city even better and to share my love for the city with others. Once I start driving a taxi, I plan on posting all my routes online somewhere as well. I don’t know why I love mentioning and recognizing intersections so much, but I definitely do.

SESSIONS
From now until the end of April I am offering psychic counseling sessions and Tarot readings at special spring prices. Psychic counseling sessions are part psychic reading and part counseling session. Please come prepared with a specific topic you would like to talk about. I prefer my sessions to be a dialog rather than a “Tell me what you see” monolog. The more energy you put into the session yourself, the more you will get out of it. So it’s good to spend some time before the session thinking about what is up for you right now and what you are hoping to get out of it.

I do the Tarot readings with the Osho Zen Tarot. Osho wrote the book on one of my favorite subjects, Intuition. The Osho Zen Tarot focuses on the present rather than the future, which I like. I do a five card spread regarding one specific topic you would like to know more about.

The spring price for psychic counseling sessions and Tarot readings is $40 for one hour. Their regular price is $55-80 sliding scale.

HOOPING
My good friend and hooping accomplice Philo and I recently went to Los Angeles to be filmed and interviewed for an upcoming movie about hooping. If all goes well, we’ll be movie stars later this year!

VERABUG.COM
After hiding my personal blog in a subdirectory for almost four years, I finally gave it its own domain: verabug.com. Blogging has been one of my favorite things to do for a long time, and I am finally ready to have the whole world see what I write on there. I’m not going to hide ANY part of myself any longer; it’s all right there on verabug.com: Childhood drama, insecurities, boastfulness, and self-absorption. They are all part of me, and there they are.

These are the things I’m excited about this spring. What are YOU excited about? Let me know because I would love to hear from you.

And finally, here is an awesome quote I saw on a bumper sticker the other day: Let the beauty YOU LOVE be what you do. Have a great Spring 2006!

Bliss,
Vera.

Vera's Going Places Newsletter

Hi everybody!

The other day a guy got into my taxi and said "Thanks so much for stopping. I was waiting for the bus but it wasn't coming, and now I'm late." I said "I guess I was in the right place at the right time." We then proceeded to talk about how being in the right place at the right time is what it's all about. You don't need education, money, looks, manipulation, or even connections to go places and to get what you want. You just need to be in the right place at the right time. That brings me to YOU. I would love to hear a story about when YOU were in the right place at the right time. Do you have one?

TAXI UPDATE
I drive a taxi for DeSoto Cab now. I drive on Mondays and Fridays from 4am to 2pm . If you ever need a taxi during those times, especially if you are going to the airport, please call me on my cell phone: 415.846.4482

CELEBRATE MY BIRTHDAY WITH ME
In a little less than two weeks, on Friday, May 5, I am turning 30. YAY! My mom's due date was actually two weeks earlier, on April 21st, but I decided to stay inside just a little longer because I wanted to be born on 5/5. To celebrate my proud age of 30, I will be at Yerba Buena Gardens (www.yerbabuenagardens.com/maps.html) from 3pm to sunset for some hooping and other fun in the sun. That's Friday, May 5, 3pm to sunset (~8pm). Please stop by and say hi. I would love to see you.

EUROPE TRIP
Then, two days after my birthday, Antti and I are going to Finland and Germany for two weeks! I have never been to Finland and am V ERY excited. And while in Germany , I'll be going to my 10-year school reunion to see what all my former classmates are up to.

That's all for now!
Bliss,
Vera.

You are the earth and you do all the work

My friend Antonio and I were recently talking about how humans used to think that the earth was flat. Antonio mentioned that, similarly, humans used to think that the sun revolves around the earth when really, the earth revolves around the sun.

That's when it came to me that that illusion--the illusion about the sun rotating around the earth--is a metaphor about life, and that that illusion is still alive and well in a slightly different form today: You often think that things rotate around you, that things happen to you, that the movement in your life happens externally. But that is an illusion. YOU rotate around everything else, YOU make things happen, the movement in your life happens INTERNALLY. You are the earth, and the sun is the rest of your life, and you revolve around it. I have always understood that sentiment, which is why I frame everything in a way that empowers the person, rather than makes the person feel helpless regarding potential unpleasant events in the future.

Recently I did a reading for myself, and guess what, I saw an unpleasant immediate future for myself. I saw myself being curled up, depressed and tired and confused, for several months. But the thing is that I also saw the end to that period of discomfort. I saw myself coming out of it and feeling serene, relaxed and confident.

Like many others, I thought it would be hard to swallow to receive the information that something unpleasant was imminent. But it wasn't. Somehow, knowing what I'm about to go through, makes it easier to bear. I strongly feel that I will be able to endure it more easily this way than if it had come as a surprise. Maybe it's because I already know that I will come out okay at the other end. But isn't that how it always is? Somehow, no matter what the crisis is, things are always okay at the other end. Maybe my vision cemented that knowledge for me, and I am no longer afraid of a crisis. Either way, this experience has made me feel different--more positive--about receiving "bad" news.

All you have to do is ask

Today I heard from two different friends who recently decided to spontaneously ask the universe/the powers that be/god/whatever-you-want-to-call-it for help, and within 24 hours they got what they asked for.

Justin, a musician, writes in an email to all of his friends:

So, I have to admit I'd been pretty depressed about music for quite a while. It seemed like nothing was happening and nobody was noticing anything I did. So, I prayed to the universe for a sign.

A day later I got a call on the phone from ASCAP, my performing rights organization.

They told me my song No Truth Anymore was chosen by ASCAP (The American Society of Composers and Publishers) to be critiqued in front of an audience at their big Songwriting EXPO in Hollywood. I had to be down in Hollywood in three days!

Amparo writes about her apartment search:

It was getting close to the deadline of when I said I'd be out and I was getting nervous. One day, before I left on my search, I lifted my hands in the air and said "deliver me to divine residence". I repeated this 4 times as I faced North, South, East, and West. I pictured what I wanted...really focused on it. Later, while driving to see a listed apartment, I drove by a "for rent" sign. Immediately I liked the vibe and the elderly landlord sitting outside the place waiting for visitors. [...] I filled out the application that day and I got it!

Wow! How inspiring and encouraging. It really can be that simple if you believe in it. Try it for yourself. You can always ask for help. I think the universe secretly likes to be talked to and acknowledged, so start talking to it as if it were a person and tell it what you want. You might just get it.
